Secret Cinema in London
“I didn’t ever imagine it would be like this so I was both shocked and surprised at the same time. I thought we were coming to watch a film!” – one Secret Cinema attendee interviewed by BBC Newshour
I, too, had heard bits and pieces about Secret Cinema and thought it was merely a pop-up shop-style movie theater. Oh how wrong I was!
If you want to get the real scoop, listen to BBC Newshour from yesterday. One of their reporters participated in this mystery night out in London and finds herself on trial, convicted and then sent off to a prison yard a la “Shawshank Redemption.”
I was only able to source yesterday’s Newshour podcast in its entirety (if you haven’t listened to Newshour, it’s a great listen anyway!) but you can scroll to 35:46 to hear about Secret Cinema! Also, check out some of the photos taken at this recent one. Talk about experiencing a movie!
Have you gone to Secret Cinema? What did you think?
Gap’s London Tote
I just spotted this city tote on Gap.com. 100% cotton canvas with a sweet design of London on the front for $19.95. They also do Paris, San Francisco and New York! What a stylish way to carry home groceries!
London Underground gone wild
Have you heard about this? Some Londoners are having a laugh covering over the usual London Underground signs with something a little more fun. Check out a few more on Stickers on the Central Line.
NPR covered the story. Have a listen!
Lovely London print
I love this silk screen print by Nicola Meiring (£60), which is the first of a series of European prints. So retro and sweet!
Take me to London!
This is probably better suited for a Monday, but I’m posting it anyway! Thanks to Ally for sharing this!
Have a wonderful weekend wherever you are!
Shard Tower opens
The London skyline seems to be changing by the day! Meet London’s Shard, an 87-story tower in Southwark, which is officially the tallest building in Europe.
There’s something spookily Lord of the Rings about it, am I right? (Or at least Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol).
It’s currently opening with 26 floors of vacant office space. The only tenant so far is the Shangri-la Hotel, which is using floors 34 to 52. Read more about it.
Swimmers banned from Thames
Put away your swimming costumes (translation: swimsuits) and goggles.
The Thames is officially closed to swimmers by the Port of London Authority.
Whose idea of a good time involves swimming in the polluted, not to mention freezing waters of the Thames (I know, I know, it’s not as polluted as it used to be …)? Well, there are “wild swimmers” who do enjoy fighting the strong currents and whirlpools of the Thames. Now they’ll need a permit for the pleasure.
I think I’ll stick to the swimming pool.
Orbit Tower is out of this world
If you haven’t yet seen the AcelorMittal Orbit Tower, take a gander. This feast for the eyes was unveiled last month and may give the Eiffel Tower a run for its money.
At 377 feet high, it’s Britain’s largest work of public art and it’s located in the Olympic Park in Stratford, East London, where the Summer Games will be held next month.
So far, the reviews are mixed. Some people love it, some people hate it. Many are wishing they weren’t living in its shadow. What do you think? It reminds me of something you might see in Las Vegas – part rollercoaster, part revolving restaurant in the sky!
