Interview with Anglotopia founder Jonathan Thomas
I discovered Anglotopia.net a few months after I launched Britrish.com and have enjoyed the content, from its travel pieces to news headlines to British tips and everything in between.
I finally had a chance to connect with founder Jonathan Thomas, who runs the site with his wife Jackie, from their home in Valparaiso, Indiana. Here’s what he had to say:
Q: For those who are unfamiliar, tell me about Anglotopia.
A: Anglotopia is the website for people who love Britain. We’re the largest and most popular website on the web dedicated to Anglophiles.
Q: How did the website get started?
A: Anglotopia started in a closet in Chicago as an outlet for my passion for Britain. I was desperate to get back to Britain and thought I could make a little money if I started a blog. 6 years later, it’s paid for 4 trips to Britain and become my full time job.
Q: What’s been the secrets of your site’s success?
A: There’s not really a secret really. Just write as often as possible on topics that people want to read. Do it with passion.
Q: What content is most popular on your website?
A: Generally our articles about British Culture and Language usually get the most traction.
Q: What do you like most about Britain and British life?
A: Their sense of history. We just don’t have much history here, especially not in the mid-west where I live.
Q: What are your favorite places in the U.K.?
A: My favorite place is Shaftesbury, Dorset. You can read why here.
Q: What advice would you give to someone who has never been to the U.K. before?
A: It will not be the place you expect it to be from books, TV and movies. It will be better. After you’ve adjusted.
Q: Do you ever dream of moving to the U.K.?
A: It’s my life goal to live in the U.K. and hold a scarlet passport. But it’s probably not going to happen for a long time. The U.K. has very strict immigration controls right now (thanks, David Cameron) and it’s basically made it impossible for us to move there right now. Americans are usually shocked to learn how hard it is for them to move to the UK. Unless you’re a rich banker or marry a British citizen, it’s almost impossible. Which is a shame as that’s where we really want to be and are limited to one trip a year.

Trish, glad I found your site this morning. I’m a lifelong Anglophile (English grandmother, mother) and have been reading Anglotopia for three years. I include a lot of English recipes on my food blog.
Welcome, Jean and thanks! I will be sure to check out your food blog!
I love Anglotopia and am delighted for Jonathan that it’s funded trips to Britain.
And I recently discovered Jean’s Delightful Repast blog too, so this just proves you know all the right people!
Yes, great company! I’m hoping to spotlight fellow bloggers and anglophiles regularly on Britrish!
Wonderful to read the story of Jonathan’s love affair with Shaftesbury again (via the link)!
Yes! I’ve never been but would love to go…
